Anfaplace Pro Casablanca halted by Fog and Subsequently Called OFF for the Day

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 September, 2017 - Anfaplace Shopping Center, Casablanca - In an extremely unlikely turns of events, the Anfaplace Pro Casablanca was halted after only 17 minutes of surfing in Heat 1 of the men’s opening round, and later called OFF for the day when the fog failed to clear.

Conditions looked fun this morning when competition launched around 8:45 a.m, with three foot surf breaking over the Anfaplace sandbanks. However just past the 17-minute mark in men’s Round 1 Heat 1, a heavy fog literally blinded the judges and event officials had to put the heat on hold. Followed hourly calls until at 2:30 p.m the decision was finally made to send everyone home and reconvene Wednesday.

“In summer we have pretty heavy temperature differences between inland and the ocean, which create that fog phenomenon,” Laurent Miramon, contest director said. “No one can predict this, it’s pretty random and all the forecasts called for a very nice day. We had great waves up until then and it’s a shame we had to stop that early. But the forecast for the rest of the week is quite good so I’m confident we’re going to run this event in great conditions.”

In the opening heat, Noe Mar McGonagle (CRI), 21, had the situation on lock with two decent scores and a firm lead over two local surfers, heading into the final few minutes of the bout. When the heat was put on hold, the Costa Rican was the first surfer to paddle in.

“I didn’t plan to come to Morocco but I was disappointed with my results in Pantin and the Azores so I decided to compete here,” McGonagle said. “This was my first surf, and it looked like it was going to be a super fun day but unfortunately that happened. I was just trying to figure out conditions, taking plenty of waves, and I think it should be a really fun event.”

The call was made to call all male competitors Wednesday at 8 a.m for a potential re-start of the event. The women are OFF Wednesday and will have a first call Thursday morning.
