Pull&Bear Pantin Classic Galicia Pro
Yago Dora and Ian Gouveia put on a show in fun surf
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 August, 2017 - The Pull&Bear Pantin Classic Galicia Pro resumed on Day 2 with good three-to-five foot surf to complete twenty-eight heats of the men’s event. Surfers first completed the remaining heats of Round One before moving into the top seeds’ second round of competition.
World No. 25 Ian Gouveia (BRA), 24, rekindled his European leg love with excellent surfing to make his way into Round Three. The Brazilian surfer who qualified for the Championship Tour last season with four excellent results in Galicia, Azores, Morocco and Cascais, finds himself in a difficult situation this time around and will hope for the same kind of momentum to turn his season around.
“Surfing on the CT is definitely a dream come true,” Gouveia said. “It’s been fun surfing those incredible waves but at the same time a bit tough trying to get results on the CT and the QS at the same time. This is the first heat I make on the QS this whole season. Last year my season really started here so hopefully I can do it again. There’s plenty of events left so I’m staying positive and confident.”
Nomme Mignot (FRA), 20, explored the high end of the judging scale with power surfing moves to post an impressive 17.20 combined heat total. His highest single ride of 8.93 came in the form of two critical forehand carves on a solid set wave that came right when the talented Frenchman was sitting in the lineup with first priority.
“Waves have improved a lot and I like it when there’s a bit of size,” Mignot said. “I knew that was a big heat and that I’d need to step it up with big turns but I managed to stay relaxed. I know I’m capable of surfing at that level and I really just needed to stay calm, take the right waves and try not to fall off.”
Yago Dora (BRA), 21, put all his eggs in the aerial basket on the other hand and belted the event’s highest combined heat total, a near-perfect 18.03. The current QS No. 7, who shocked the world with a third place as a wildcard in the Oi Rio Pro earlier this season, is in an ideal position to keep building his QS rank in Europe and potentially qualify for the elite tour next year.
“That was a fun heat; watching conditions I realized the waves were really quick and if I got a closeout I might as well try to do an air or a big turn,” Dora explained. “My strategy paid off, it’s been flat for a week here so we’re all psyched to get good waves today.”
Willian Cardoso (BRA), 31, demonstrated that massive scores can be given for all different forms of modern surfing, and dropped an incredible 9.43 for a combination of four backhand gauges on a long Pantin left.
“The tide was super low and the swell pushed a lot, I was just blessed to get waves like that,” Cardoso stated. “I know my potential in surf like this and I just hope the waves keep pumping tomorrow. Everyone’s ripping today and it’s very nice to be back in Pantin with these waves.”
The Brazilian, currently in his best season on the Qualifying Series, equipped his board with a ‘Flything’ sensor recording his turn rate and torque during the heat. The new technology brought on by the Galician Institute of Technology (ITG) will help decide which surfer can perform the fastest turn and award him/her a bonus 1,000€ for the effort.
“I like testing new tools to improve my surfing,” he continued. “I’m not sure how I did with my turns but I’ll look at the numbers later and hopefully learn a thing or two about my heat.”
Thursday morning’s call will have the men ready for an 8:15 a.m early start to complete the remaining twelve heats of Round Two and the women on call around noon for one or two rounds of women’s action.
