Las Americas Pro Tenerife
Lacomare and Ado lead the field on Day 1
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 January, 2018 - Las Americas, Tenerife - The Las Americas Pro Tenerife, Stop No. 2 on the World Surf League (WSL) European Qualifying Series, launched today in clean two-to-three foot surf at Las Americas. A long day of competition unfolded to complete the opening round of the men’s event as well as six heats of the women’s.
Marc Lacomare (FRA) dominated with an excellent display of surfing on both the lefts and rights of Las Americas. The Frenchman started with a decent wave but quickly took things to the next level, posting an excellent 8.50 on a long left doubling up on the reef. He later started on a fast right-hander and managed to lock in three powerful backhand turns for a near-perfect 9.67, the best wave of the day.
“I just got here last night so I haven’t had much training but the wave looks fun!” Lacomare said. “Today was a little small but I hope it’s going to grow a bit and I’m stoked to be here. It’s my first time surfing this spot so it’s good to start in Round One and have a heat with three guys only to get some experience. There’s a little power even at that size and I can definitely see a lot of potential. The setup is really cool too with the wave right on the rocks and close to the beach for the people watching.”
Earlier in the day, Costa Rica’s Jason Torres was the first surfer to truly exploit the potential of the spot, finding two great waves for a combined heat total of 14.80 and a spot into Round Two.
“I’m super happy to be here, this place is amazing!” Torres said. “I’m stoked to make my first heat and focused on the next one now. It’s my first visit to the Canary Islands and I’m staying with a friend from Venezuela who lives here which is great. This season I’m going to do a lot more events and try to make the Top 100 to surf in the big ones.”
15 year-old local surfer Paolo Giorgi (CNY) put on a great fight in Heat 11 and lead the battle for most of the 25-minute bout against Brazil’s Lucas Vicente and Jose Maria de Paz (ESP). A last minute comeback from the Brazilian flipped the heat but the Canarian will have a chance to redeem himself in Round Two when the event resumes.
The Basque duo made of Hodei Collazo (EUK) and Jatyr Berasaluce (EUK) came out strong as well, posting solid scores to make their way into the top seeds’ round. Collazo destroyed the long lefts on his backhand, performing multiple turns for two excellent waves and a total of 16.40 out of 20.
“I surfed the last event we did here about 17 years ago but it was huge,” Collazo said. “I was in Tenerife about two months ago but we surfed other spots on the North coast and towards Los Gigantes where Jonathan (Gonzalez) lives. I’ve been out of the water for a bit due to a little injury of my right hand, so I was super psyched to get in the water and surf again. I have a great board for small waves so I had a lot of fun out there.”
“Conditions were super easy to surf, it was clean and a little hollow on the reef,” Berasaluce added. “I took a little break last year to free surf and film a project in Africa, I had an incredible time there and I’m excited to get back to competing.”
Following the completion of the men’s first round, the women’s field took it to the playful peaks of Las Americas to launch their European season.
Pauline Ado (FRA) opened fire in the first bout, surfing faster and stronger than her opponents to post two excellent scores and take an easy win and ticket into Round Two. The long time Championship Tour surfer set the scale for the women’s competition and remained unmatched, claiming the day’s highest heat total.
“Conditions were very nice, offshore and really beautiful waves, and I finally got two!” Ado said. “The end of last year was a bit tough for me but I had a nice break in December and I’m super motivated again to train and get back to events.”
The surprise came from local surfer Daniela Quiros (ESP) who put on a great show as well and placed second to advance through her first ever round of a World Surf League event.
Leticia Canales Bilbao (EUK) came a close second in the day’s top scores ranking, with a solid heat total 15.84 for her forehand attack of the long lefts at Las Americas. Reigning European Champion Carol Henrique (PRT) made her first appearance of 2018 count as well, with a decent performance in Round One to advance ahead of another local talent, Sofia Ascanio (ESP).
The Spanish athletes made a statement in the women’s opening round of competition, claiming eight of the qualifying positions. Surfers and event officials will reconvene at 7:30 a.m Wednesday to reassess conditions and decide of the day’s schedule.
