Maroubra grom champs crowned through 3 divisions

Groms lock in great heat totals in the clean conditions

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 October, 2017 - The Rip Curl GromSearch finished off with a bang today with six new champions being crowned across three different age divisions.
The 16-and-Under Boys saw a tight battle between all competitors, with all four finalists locking in respectable heat totals, however, Broulee’s Harry Phillips ensured he would be taking the coveted title south, thanks to an impressive 15.23 two-wave heat total. Phillips executed a barrage of backside snaps to claim the title ahead of local favourite Tye Koolis (Maroubra, NSW) who finished in the runner-up position.
Former Australian Junior Champion and perennial GromSearch standout Kirra-Belle Olsson (Avoca, NSW) added another accomplishment to her overflowing mantelpiece, taking out the 16-and-Under Girls. Olsson relied on her consistent backhand surfing to post a 15.4 two-wave heat total and claim the title.
Marlon Harrison (Coolangatta, Qld) ensured one GromSearch title would be heading interstate, thanks to a commanding presence in the 14-and-Under Boys final. Harrison notched up a 13.67 heat total to claim the win ahead of Mike Clayton-Brown (Corlette, NSW), Jai Glinderman (Lennox Head, NSW) and Zeb Stokes (Buddina, Qld) who took out second, third and fourth respectively.
Nyxie Ryan (Lennox Head, NSW) continued her rampage through the GromSearch series, taking out the 14-Girls division. Ryan flared in the throaty Maroubra peaks, amassing 15.00 points to get the win ahead of fellow junior dynamo Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon, NSW) who finished in the runner-up spot.
All Rip Curl GromSearch events include boys’ and girls’ divisions in 16 and under, 14 and under, and 12 and under age groups. Surfers receive points for their results in each event, which then count towards a National GromSearch ratings system, allowing surfers from around Australia to compare their results with contemporaries. Leaders on the National Ratings will then qualify for the last event of the series, the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final, to be held at Woonoona, NSW on January 15-17, 2017.
The Rip Curl GromSearch series started in 1999 as a one-day event at Jan Juc in Victoria. Since then it has developed into the strongest international series for 16 year and under surfers in the world. With parallel Rip Curl GromSearch series in over 10 countries, it has become a crucial stepping-stone in the development of elite junior surfers.
