QS warriors battle as Pro Anglet launches in small surf

Anglet Pro

Simultaneous heats run on double banks to take advantage of contestable surf

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 August, 2017 - The Pro Anglet launched today in two-to-three foot surf and completed the initial two rounds of the men’s competition. Conditions on hand and the outlook for the week forced event organizers to run simultaneous heats on double banks to capitalize on the lower part of the tide.

Jihad Khodr (BRA), 33, put on the day’s performance this morning, posting an incredible 9 point ride on a clean right-hander. The former Championship Tour surfer from Brazil, annihilated the waves on his forehand and showed everyone the scoring potential on offer.

“I surfed the North bank this morning and there were some really nice rights,” Khodr stated. “I surf a really light epoxy board from my friend Canfield in Brazil and it feels great in those waves. I’m stoked to get that best wave of the day. You have to prepared for all kinds of conditions and I’m happy I was able to surf well in those today.”

Form junior surfer Leo Paul Etienne (FRA), 18, continued to acclimate to the QS level and came out on top of his opening heat in Anglet. The Guadeloupe surfer will represent his region at the World Junior Championships early next year and every bit of experience built amongst older competitors will count.

“It was small but still pretty fun, I got a few opened waves which were nice,” Etienne said. “My scores were decent and I did a couple of ok turns so I’m happy with that. Lacanau was my best result yet on the QS, so my goal here is to try and do as well if not better. I’m lighter than some of the guys so that probably helps in the small surf.”

Andy Criere (ESP), 22, was one of many athletes who surfed twice today, and built momentum in Round One to post the second Round’s strongest performance. A former finalist in the inaugural 2015 edition in Anglet, Criere was unable to repeat his performance last season and will look to reach the finals again on Basque territory.

“I’ve been very consistent this season but my results are pretty average so I want to try to improve on that especially during the Euro leg,” Criere said. “It’s always good to be home, you know the spots well and already have your little habits there. I decided to stick to the rights because on my backhand I need less room to fit more and better turns in.”

The Pro Anglet is supported by the city of Anglet, the Région Nouvelle Aquitaine, Carlsberg, Monster Energy, Magicseaweed, L’Équipe and Virgin Radio among others.
